Opal Wendy Boston bear

Snowy white Opal is an original Wendy Boston teddy bear, and the world’s first fully-washable stuffed bear to be introduced in 1954.  So, if she ever needs a clean, you can just pop her in the washing machine! This procedure was actually demonstrated on the BBC in 1955.

Typically, Opal is unjointed and made to be seated, with floppy legs enabling her to do so.  She’s filled with either nylon or foam rubber (as well her ears), and has a pair of patented lock-in blue safety eyes, designed by Wendy’s husband Ken. Her nose and mouth are embroidered in black thread, along with three claws to each paw.

Opal’s muzzle and pads are short-clipped plush and, although the front of her right one has lost some fur, she’s generally very well-endowed. Her fur has mellowed to cream in some areas, so she might need a clean to whiten her up.

This innovative bear wears her pretty white nylon dress and, not to be outdone by our white Chiltern, also a multiple strung necklace of  vintage pearls.
