This old trooper with a long shaved muzzle, is a distinguished, early JK Farnell bear, with original webbed claws c.1918 – before the Farnell design was officially registered as Alpha. Mostly woodwool-stuffed, Fitzwilliam stands tall at 51cm (20″), and closely resembles the Alpha bear bought for Christopher Robin in 1921.
Over the past century, Fitz has survived two World Wars, though suffered various wounds, resulting in a pair of eye transplants (back-painted glass), and felt ‘skin’ grafts to his footpads. The right one still has its carded sole, while his paw pads have also been partly patched-up, but mostly hidden by the sleeves of his clothes.
Additionally, Fitz’s nose and mouth required cosmetic surgery, being re-stitched over the battle-worn remains of his originals. His ears too, after being blasted off during an air raid, needed to be re-attached. And, not surprisingly, Fitz completely lost his voice through sheer trauma.
The stress Fitz has suffered during his lengthy life, caused some loss of fur to his legs (mostly at the back) where they’re now bald, along with areas of his right arm, forehead, and hump. Luckily, being lovingly nursed back to health in recent years, ensured the rest of his gold mohair stayed intact. Happily, Fitz is still fully-mobile, and a good strong bear.
To this day, he remains loyal to his King and country and proudly wears a King Edward VIII Coronation medal 1937 (the King that never was due to his abdication soon after). Also a Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee badge 2022, and National Army Museum badge. His jacket is made of cotton velvet, with a striped cotton Grandad shirt underneath, plus a linen, hand-cut tie.
