A dearly-loved Chad Valley Cubby bear, with red-embroidered leg label c.1930s. Cubby sits 30cm (12″) high in his fixed position, and has a swivel head with jointed arms. Kapok-stuffed, at some point in his life Cubby lost his left ear, and now wears a bob hat made from a bonnet.

Most of his features are original, including brown lock-in safety eyes, dating him to the latter part of the decade. Cubby’s nose stitching is also original – missing a couple of outer threads at each side. His smiley mouth has been resewn, and left paw pad recovered in felt, while his other pads have some repairs, but are still in pretty good condition.

Made of dual plush cinnamon and beige wool plush (may have been white originally), Cubby’s outer right foot has more or less been completely patched with mohair, along with a small hole to his right ankle. The stuffing has settled in his left ankle so it’s very floppy, and his torso too is a little saggy.

Although Cubby’s fur shows overall thinning and balding,  he’s well-endowed at the back, and is an endearing cub, with playful downturned paws. To co-ordinate with his hat, this cute character wears a handknitted jumper and scarf, with a floral wooden peg.
