A stunning, very old white silk chiffon diaphanus coat, all handsewn with a beautiful drape. The coat is lightly padded, and lined with a further layer of silk chiffon. It fastens at the top with four tiny concealed mother-of-pearl buttons, and has a sweeping full length slit at the back.

Gathered onto a yolk of ruching, this elegant coat is in overall good condition, though shows some wear including a couple of faint rust spots to one shoulder at the back, and a few repairs around the seam of the neckline, along with a little discolouration. Also, part of the central front seam has been resewn.

The characteristic wrinkles of the silk are created by the weft yarns being pulled in one direction. We’ve no idea what that means exactly, but a spinner would probably know!  Due to its soft, sheer qualities, silk chiffon tends to be used mostly for special occasions,  and this charming coat was undoubtedly made for a christening.

It measures 74 cms (29″) long and 36 cms (14″) armhole to armhole. Inside sleeve is 15 cms (6″) long. The coat should fit bears 22″-24″ tall, depending on their build. Also included is a pretty silk rose corsage. The vintage panama bonnet is sold.

Our guest model is Mathilda Chiltern, 24″ tall, now re-homed.
